Walking Through the Doors That Open
I've spent a lot of my life white-knuckling the outcome. Deciding how things should go, mapping the route, and bracing against anything that didn't match the plan. It felt responsible. Mostly it was fear in a sensible outfit.
Letting go of the outcome sounds lovely on a coffee mug. In practice…it's hard. Surrender doesn't mean giving up or sitting still. It means doing the work in front of you, then being willing to walk through the doors that actually open, instead of pounding on the ones you decided should.
And the fear doesn't disappear just because you've decided to be brave. It shows up at every threshold. What if I'm not ready. What if I'm not enough. What if this is a mistake and everyone sees it. I've learned to let fear come along for the ride. It just doesn't get to drive.
What surprised me is this: when I stopped forcing the path, life started moving me in a direction I never could have seen coming. New places, new challenges, and people who have become some of the most important in my life. People full of character, integrity, and high standards. The kind of people you watch and think, that…that's who I want to be.
Being surrounded by people like that is humbling. They believe in me, sometimes more than I believe in myself. So the work right now is closing that gap. Building myself up until my belief in me matches theirs. Not by pretending the fear isn't there, but by walking through the new and scary things anyway and collecting proof, one door at a time.
If you're standing at a threshold of your own, here's what's helped me:
Hold the plan loosely. Make it, work it, then let real life edit it.
Notice what opens easily. Not everything worth doing has to be a fight. Sometimes the open door is the answer.
Say the fear out loud. "I'm scared this won't work" loses a lot of its power once it's spoken.
Borrow belief. When you can't believe in yourself yet, lean on the people who do. Let their confidence carry you until yours catches up.
Take the next step, not the whole staircase.
I don't know exactly where these doors lead. Gasp, I know…and I'm okay with that. For someone who used to need the whole map, that might be the biggest change of all 💛
